The internet always has different trends in store. People like certain aesthetics and adopt them, making them a trend. Cottagecore, cluttercore, fairycore, etc., are some of these trending aesthetics, and now weirdcore—an aesthetic about fantasy art and funky decor—is trending. Mushroom stools lend themselves perfectly to this aesthetic. Instead of buying this accessory, you can DIY it without spending much. Whether you're a seasoned DIY enthusiast or a beginner, don't worry—this article has all you need and will guide you through the process.

DIY Mushroom Ottoman: a Step-by-step Guide

DYI-ing a mushroom ottoman can be a fun and rewarding project if it's planned well and all the materials are gathered. Let's discover all the required items and learn how to use them in the process.

These are the materials you'll require:

    • Large foam block (to create base).

    • Circular foam cushion (for the top), a big pillow, or a cushion, preferably round.

    • Fabric of your desired color, preferably red, white, beige, brown, or other aesthetic earthy tones.

    • Polka dot fabric for the top (optional).

    • Batting (for additional padding).

    • Staple guns and Staples.

    • Heavy-duty glue or glue gun.

    • Scissors.

    • Markers.

    • Measuring tape.

    • Wood log or short stool (optional).

Gather all the required materials and follow these steps:

Step 1: Preparing the Foam Base

For the base of your mushroom ottoman, select a large block of foam that will form the cylindrical stem of the mushroom. Choose the block according to your height preference for your ottoman, as the size of the block will determine it.

Now, you'll need a measuring tape to measure the height and width of the foam block. Ensure it's stable enough to support weight. Cut the foam to your preferred size with a sharp knife or a foam cutter. Even out the rough edges to give it a uniform shape.

Step 2: Shaping the Mushroom Top

The next step is to create the top of your mushroom ottoman by using a circular foam cushion. You can use a foam cushion, a round pillow, or a round cushion that's larger than the mushroom stem you have crafted. Heavy-duty glue or a glue gun will help you attach the foam cushion, pillow, or cushion to the foam block stem. Attach them properly, and before allowing it to dry, make sure it's centered and secure properly.

If you want a rounder top, you can attach multiple layers of foam and stick them together with the help of a glue gun or heavy-duty glue. You will need to cut the edges to shape it like a dome, giving it a mushroom look.

Step 3: Adding Batting for Extra Cushioning

Your mushroom ottoman is almost done, but before you move on to the final steps, you can wrap it with batting to give it a soft, plush, and cushiony feel. If you are willing to do so, measure your ottoman structure and then cut the batting according to the measurements.

Now, you can cover the entire structure, including the stem, with it. After adjusting the batting on the structure, attach it to the ottoman structure with a staple gun. Make sure it's even and smooth. If you do not have perfect foam, the batting will resolve the issue by hiding any imperfections.

Step 4: Covering the Ottoman With Fabric

Now, your mushroom ottoman is ready to be covered with a cloth of your choice. Pick a cloth that compliments your home's aesthetic and decor, as well as goes with the mushroom theme. For a classic mushroom look, you can use a red fabric with polka dots for the top and any neutral color for the stem, preferably beige.

Cut the fabric for the top while making sure to cut the cloth large enough to cover the sides and staple underneath. Now staple the cloth to the underside of the cap, ensuring it is secured tightly to avoid leaving any loose areas or wrinkles. Next, cut a rectangular piece of fabric for the stem and wrap it around the foam base. Secure it with staples tightly, and your mushroom ottoman is ready.

Step 5: Attaching the Ottoman Legs for Extra Support and Height

You can attach legs or a short stool if you want to give your ottoman extra height or support. Just turn your mushroom ottoman upside down and attach the legs or stool properly at the bottom of the foam stem. Now, stick them together with heavy-duty glue or screws to make sure they're attached properly and in place. Finally, check if the mushroom ottoman is sturdy and strong for regular use.

You can make more mushroom ottomans by following this process and placing them in your living area, bedroom, kids' room, or any place you want to give a whimsical, weirdcore touch. This accessory not only increases aesthetic appeal but also works as extra seating, a decorative item, or a footrest when required. You can use your hand-crafted piece of art however you like.
