How to Build a DIY Rustic Coffee Table?

Building a coffee table could be considered an easy task. If you have all the tools and materials handy, you can easily get started. Here are some necessary tools and materials with the following steps to build a rustic coffee table.

    Tools and Materials

    • 2’×10’×8' pine boards ( two in quantity)

    • Circular or table saw

    • Miter saw

    • Kreg jig

    • 2 ½" Kreg screws

    • Wood glue

    • Clamps

    • Drill

    • Sander

    • Planer ( not an essential tool, but it makes the unwinding procedure easier)

    • Multi-tool

    • Stain or preferred paint

    Steps

Step 1: Cut the boards as per the measurement

Begin with building a table of 4’×20". But you can make the table of any size you want.

Begin with cutting the pine boards with the required measurements.

    Cut list:-

    • 4' boards ( 2 in quantity) - To build the top of the table

    • 16" boards (4 in quantity) - To build the table pillars( legs of the table), cut them into these sizes and adjust the height according to your preference.

Step 2: Remove rounded edges from boards

This step isn't mandatory. However, if you want to consider it, use a circular saw to trim the rounded edges of the inside pieces.

In the best-case scenario, a table saw would be a better option, even though a circular saw will also work just fine. Square edges would look aesthetically pleasing, but rounded ones can also be an attractive sight.

Step 3: Put together the top pieces

To build the top part of the table, use glue and screw to attach the top two 4' pieces together.

Then, using a mixture of sawdust and wood glue, fill the gaps between the boards. You can also use wood fillers as it also works well. However, the mixture of sawdust or glue appears natural and visually appealing.

Step 4: Put together the table pillars and attach the top

Use glue and screw the two 16" pieces to build the table pillars. Once the legs are ready, use a Kreg Jig to attach them to the top piece.

Step 5: Distress, Sand and Stain

Use a hand planer and a multi-tool to distress the wood. Make divots and lines for a rustic look. All the lines and imperfections will appear after you stain the wood. After distressing, use 80, 100, and 220-grit sandpaper with an orbital sander to make the table smooth.

For staining, apply the following for a better result:

    1. Minwax Special Walnut

    2. Whitewash ( dilute 50% white paint with 50% water. Apply it and quickly wipe using a damp rag)

    3. Minwax Weathered Oak

    4. Minwax Jacobean

Finally, you have the rustic coffee table ready to enhance your living space.
