Aiming for a streak-free clean window? It is a tricky task! Nevertheless, if you apply the right techniques, it becomes an art that you can master easily! Whether you are cleaning big windows or small windows or whether you are cleaning windows from outside or inside, cleaning windows requires attention to detail and appropriate tools and materials. This simple step-by-step guide walks you through the procedure for getting a spotless and crystal-clear shine without any streaks.
Step 1: Gathering the Supplies
It is essential to gather all the supplies needed beforehand. This ensures that all the supplies are handy and in enough quantities. List includes:
-
A cleaning solution
-
A microfiber cloth/sponge
-
A bucket
-
A ladder (optional)
-
A set of rubber gloves
Step 2: Arranging Cleaning Solution

Homemade solutions are a better choice because they are non-toxic. An easy, homemade cleaning solution can be prepared by mixing 50% distilled water with 50% white vinegar. Add dishwashing soap to this mix if dealing with stubborn stains. Ensure to use distilled water and not tap water to make this solution. This is because tap water has hard water and leaves behind uninvited streaks.
Step 3: Dust to Prepare the Window
Next, prepare the area around the window by dusting the frames, handles and sills. This ensures that these areas do not transfer the dirt onto the glass later. A microfibre cloth is the secret here. Having a separate microfibre cleaning cloth is not mandatory at all. If this cloth is not available, a soft brush would be a better tool for removing cobwebs and dusting off the loose dirt. It is imperative to wipe off the window sills for any debris; otherwise, all the efforts might go down the drain. Cleaning window frames right in the beginning gives a mess-free cleaning experience. This is because it prevents the dirty water from dripping into the nearby spaces. In this scenario, dirty water can drip either from frame corners or from the cleaning cloth.
Step 4: Wash the Frame and the Sill
The window frames and the sills must be cleaned even before the glass. For this, a mild detergent and a sponge are enough to wipe the dirt off the frame and from the sill. If dealing with tougher stains, using a vinegar solution is the only option. Vinegar promises a spotless cleaning. It will prevent grime from getting transferred to the glass. Keep a small brush in easy access for scrubbing the tight corners and window tracks. Certain stubborn stains might not come off easily. They will require more scrubbing. So, be patient in investing a couple of minutes more for such stubborn stains.
Step 5: Applying the Cleaning Solution
Next, proceed to apply the cleaning solution. For this, either spray the solution directly through a spray bottle or pour the mixture straight onto the glass. Spraying with a spray bottle is advisable. This is because it confirms a uniform distribution of the cleaning solution on the glass and prevents a buildup. This controls the amount of cleaning solution poured and prevents wastage. Alternatively, apply the cleaning solution using a microfibre cloth. This way, you will have more control over the quantity of the solution and pressure applied to the target areas. It prevents the frames from getting wet unnecessarily once cleaned. Refrain from using harsh chemicals or heavy soap solutions. This is because these chemicals leave behind a residue causing - the streaks!
Step 6: Cleaning the Glass

Next, to clean the glass, move the cleaning cloth, i.e. the microfibre cloth, in a zig-zag motion. Proceed in the direction from top to bottom, along the length of the glass. This zig-zag movement lifts the dirt from the glass surface and prevents it from spreading around. While dealing with stubborn stains, you need to scrub the stains twice. Avoid cleaning in circular motions because it tends to make streaks. Keep your cleaning cloth clean to avoid spreading the dust and dirt again.
Lastly, dry the glass quickly with a squeegee reverse S-pattern with a clean cloth to prevent streaks. Using a microfibre cloth ensures no lint is left behind, like paper towels. Crumpled newspaper sheets are the best tool for buffing the glass. They give a better shine than any cloth materials used otherwise. Plan and set a regular routine to clean windows. This exercise prevents any buildup making the next cleaning session quicker and a lot easier.
Some Tips | Do not plan for a window cleaning gig on a cloudy day. It might take a longer time to dry. The humid air delays the drying time period. In addition to this, winds might carry dust and other materials that might stick to the wet surface and make the glass surface dirty again! This extended time and weather conditions, both the reasons might increase the chances of streaks formation. |
