Using a self storage unit can really help when you need more space for your belongings. Whether you're moving, downsizing, or just want to declutter, how you pack your storage unit matters. Good packing helps you use all the space and keeps your things safe.

Packing correctly also means you can easily get to your belongings when you need them. If everything is packed neatly and logically, you won’t have to dig through piles of boxes to find what you’re looking for. In this article, we will go over what it takes to properly pack your storage unit such as these from Centron Self Storage

    1 - Planning and preparation

Before you start packing your storage unit, it's important to plan and get ready. First, think about what you need to store and make a list. This helps you keep track of everything and makes sure nothing gets left behind. It also helps you figure out the right size storage unit so you don't pay for more space than you need.

Get all the packing supplies you’ll need before you start. Gather sturdy boxes in different sizes, bubble wrap, packing paper, and strong tape. You’ll also need markers for labeling boxes and maybe some plastic covers for bigger items like furniture and mattresses. Having these supplies ready will make packing easier and faster.

Make an inventory list of everything you plan to store. This list helps you keep track of your stuff and makes it easier to find things later. You can also use this list to decide how to pack your items efficiently. For example, you might want to pack similar items together or pack items by room.

    2 - Maximize the space

To make the most of your storage unit, it’s important to maximize the available space. Start by using boxes of the same size. This makes stacking easier and helps you fit more into your unit.

Next, disassemble furniture and large items. Taking apart beds, tables, and other large pieces saves a lot of space and makes them easier to store. Keep the screws and small parts in labeled bags and tape them to the corresponding pieces of furniture so you don't lose them.

Use vertical space by adding shelving units. Shelves allow you to stack boxes and items safely and keep the floor space clear.

    3 - Organize the space

Making a simple map of your storage unit can help you organize the space of your unit. Draw a basic layout showing where each type of item is stored. You can tape this map inside the unit door or keep it on your phone. It will make finding items much easier.

Place items you use often near the front of the unit. This way, you can grab what you need without moving everything around. Store seasonal items or things you won’t need as often towards the back.

Leave a small walkway through your unit so you can access all areas without moving boxes each time.
