Even the most advanced, modern home in the world doesn’t just keep on working without any maintenance. Everything from the paint on your walls to your plumbing system will need to be serviced at some point, it’s just a matter of arranging it at the right time.

Appliances with moving parts that see extensive usage - such as boilers - need to be serviced even more than other parts of the home.

In this piece, we explore some of the core reasons behind why it’s so important to regularly service your boiler, from safety related concerns to the reduction of unexpected heating issues.

    Safety concerns

Modern boilers are far safer than their counterparts from just a few decades ago, but they still need looking after to keep serious problems to an absolute minimum.

During regular services, carried out by technicians from somewhere like Able Plumbers, the seals will be checked to ensure tight fits, and any important safety shutoffs and valves can also be inspected.

The safety related aspect of boiler servicing is important in all contexts, but especially in homes that are rented out. Here, it’s not just a general recommendation - it becomes a clear legal obligation, to service the boilers in the property at least once per year.

    Optimised efficiency

As you’ll no doubt have noticed, heating costs have absolutely shot up over the past few years. While it’s important to shop around for different gas providers, it’s also crucial that your boiler is working as efficiently as possible.

This requires more than just buying a new, efficient boiler. It also means having any dirt build-ups removed at regular intervals, having the settings checked to make sure they’re still perfect, and changing any seals that could result in pressure issues.

    Keeping your warranty active

Pretty much all boilers nowadays come with warranties, but most manufacturers also stipulate that you need to look after your boiler for the warranty to remain valid. Just like with a new car, after the first few years, you’ll typically need to have the boiler serviced at least once annually.

If something were to go wrong that turned out to be a manufacturer's fault, and you’d voided your warranty by failing to have services carried out, you’d likely find yourself exasperated at your mistake.

    Reducing unexpected issues

Having a boiler break down on you at any time of year, but especially during the colder winter months, can have a dramatic impact on how easy it is to live in your own home.

Being without heating and hot water can be annoying, and potentially even dangerous if it’s properly cold outside, and regular servicing is the most effective way of keeping these unexpected issues to an absolute minimum.

Regular boiler servicing isn’t at all difficult to arrange. Just find a good plumbing company, book your service, and then have it automatically set up to be done every year. It shouldn’t be too expensive, and will only take a few hours at the most in the majority of situations.
